IMG_0376A mysterious island.

An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very peculiar photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography into a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that Miss Peregrine’s children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for a good reason.

And somehow — impossible as it seems — they may still be alive…

ExpectationsI had extremely high expectations of this book. I have heard from so many people and so many blogs that this book was amazing. I also heard that the movie was good as well. *I can’t wait to watch it* It had been on my TBR list since the dawn of time and I was so happy to finally be reading it.

I enjoyed the first few chapters of the book. It went along smoothly, and the flow was so good that I felt like Jacob was telling me the story himself.

LikesThe plot and pacing were both awesome. I couldn’t put Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children down! The story was engaging and exciting, with turns and twists nestled into between each chapter. The writing style was also admirable.

Ah, the characters! *Might just be my favorite part of the book* All of them were so unique peculiar in their own way. I loved the back story around Abe and Emma, and how it circled back to Jacob.

The vintage photographs added an eerie sensation while reading the novel that couldn’t be topped. I think that the idea of putting in photographs that go along with the story is creative and different, which makes this novel stand out even more.

Of course, with all of the positive things I have to say about this book, it was a very enjoyable read.

DislikesThe story started off a little bit slow at first, but then eventually speed up to a page-turning mystery that I couldn’t put down.

That’s it!

Final ThoughtsAll in all, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children was a wonderful first installment. (There are three more books in the series, which I haven’t read yet but is definitely on my TBR list).

I was amazing in almost every aspect of my rating system, and did not disappoint. The only thing that I would every change about this book is to have the pacing be faster in the beginning, but it would have likely been difficult because the start of the book sets the stage for all of the plot twists in the middle and end.

I strongly recommend this book, especially to those who like horror, mystery, or a unique book in general.

IMG_0376Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life – and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.Β

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.Β

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to. Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words…and she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.Β

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she want to move on even if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

ExpectationsI had high expectations of this book because I had heard so many wonderful things about it. I read the synopsis and it sounded interesting as well.Β The first few chapters were light and fluffy, and eventually set the stage for the overall plot and Cath’s gradual character developement. Fangirl was off to a good start.Β

Blog Arrow Gold

LikesIn my personal opinion, the best thing about FangirlΒ was the characters. They were all a quirky and unique set of people who progressed through the story beautifully. I genuinely admired each character, even those who were supposed to be bad in the beginning, like Courtney or Reagan. All of the characters seemed to have their own back story and personal story arc that added a lot of flavor and spice to the novel. In short, the character development was phenomenal.

Another admirable trait about Fangirl is how light and fluffy of a read it is. It was quick read, and very enjoyable. The romance was sweet, but not overkill where it was obnoxious to read. Not to mention that the writing was also high quality.

I think that the pacing was good overall and the book kept me hooked in, but more about that in the Dislikes section.

Blog Arrow Gold

DislikesThe climax happens 100 pages before the book actually ends.Β I found this kind of surprising, and at first I was expecting an ever bigger twist at the end.

I was hoping for more…

Instead, there is a bunch of extra pages of resolution that were cute and fluffy, but could have been wrapped up much quicker. I don’t have much of a problem with this, and it’s kind of being nitpicky.

Blog Arrow Gold

Final ThoughtsAll in all, Fangirl delivered. I was a light and sweet read with amazing characters. It was very enjoyable and fun to read. The romance was cute, and it was executed very well. The only critiscim I had was that the plot was a little bit mixed up in some parts, but otherwise, this book was perfect. I highly recomend this book to anyone who likes romance novels, colleage stories, or just so happens to be a Β fangirl themselves. *Just like me*

IMG_0376Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she’s able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions. She’s afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb?

However, Ally’s newest teacher sees the bright, creative kid beneath the troublemaker and helps to shine a light on her gifts. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and meet other kids who break the mold. When the outsiders start to fit in, suprising things start happening inside Ally’s classroom that show’s her there’s a lot more to her — and to everyone — than a label.

ExpectationsI had mediumΒ expectations for this book. I picked it up while it I was browsing Barnes and Noble and it looked interesting so I decided to buy it.

Blog Arrow Gold

Likes The character development was incredible. Through the storyline and plot, all of the characters grow in some way or another. All of them had their own unique struggles and all overcame them in different ways. Multiple characters *cough cough Albert and Shea* started off stereotypical and basic, but then ended up being complex, original characters with life, motivation, and struggles.

This book had a great message, too with some awesome quotes: “If you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life thinking it’s stupid.”

Also, I thought the “Sketchbook of Impossible Things” that was included in the back of the book added another element to the story. It was cool to read a certain scenario/thing that happened to Ally and then see her drawing for it.

Blog Arrow Gold

DislikesThe end of the book felt a little anti-climatic, which was disappointing. I was hoping for a fuller ending to wrap the book up better. The pacing is nothing special, but it’s not bad. I can’t put my finger on it, but I felt like something was missing from this story. It felt a little bit incomplete (and no, there isn’t a sequel). Except for the things that I mentioned in the likes section, this book is average.

Blog Arrow Gold

Final ThoughtsI liked this book, but there wasn’t really anything about it that stood out and made a lasting impression on me. Yes, the character development was really good and the book had a great message, but other than that, there isn’t a lot of things that stand out. If you like non-fiction, then I recommend it, if you don’t like non-fiction, then I don’t recommend it.

Even though there were some things that I would have definitely changed in this book, all in all I liked it and it told a great story, with a good message and a strong protagonist.

NaNoWriMo Update

OK, I’m pushing through!Β So far, I haven’t gone a day without writing, but I did have a writer’s block just yesterday. I was able to form some random words together that I will probably have to edit it later and completely redo it.

Please note: As I am in the process of creating a memorable story, some aspects/details that were mentioned below may not be present in my final draft.

Julianna Evergreen’s life is normal. Well, at least it used to be. Ever since her mother died, her favorite person in the entire world, things have been hard. Her Dad has one unpaid bill before they lose their house. She has a hard time in school.Β But one day, everything changes. While walking to school, she meets a boy named Jack with a strange symbol on his left hand, the same one that Julianna has on hers.

Soon, the two embark on a journey across a magical world called Pie Land — to meet princesses, dragons, unicorns, and more.

But Pie Land is in terrible danger.

It is being overthrown by a vicious tyrant named Newt that pledges to destroy a peaceful dynasty that has successfully ruled Β Pie Land for over a thousand years.

Julianna doesn’t know what’s going on, but whatever it is, she’s going to find out.

So there it is! An official synopsis of my in the works novel.
