Something terrible happened today.
Well, technically I happened on Thursday, but nevermind that. I’ve been so busy with school that I haven’t had the free time to write a blog post.
My pet desert tortoise, Coconut passed away.
As you can see, there is another tortoise in the picture. His name is Speedy, and he is well and healthy. Speedy is Polly, my sister’s tortoise.
Coconut died because of old age. She also had a repository condition that impacted her breathing.
There were times when she wouldn’t eat any food, even her favorite, watermelon. A couple of weeks before she died, the only way Coconut would get any food is by my Dad (wearing gloves on) would have to open her mouth for her and make her eat. It made me worry about her.
We’ve had our tortoises for over 6 years, so you could say that I grew up with her. My sister and I loved watching Coconut and Speedy crunch on lettuce, and whenever we would have friends over, the first thing they would ask was to pet the tortoises.
There was even one time where we had a “tortoise race” where Speedy and Coconut were competing to see who was the fastest. Of course, being my tortoise, (and given the fact that I bribed her with lettuce), she was triumphant. But this was a long time ago, when Coconut was healthy and younger.
We would often take her to the vet, order some antibiotics, have them work for a few days, and then she would go back to not eating and not leaving her tortoise house. (It’s actually a doghouse, but whatever…)
But one day, when my sister, mother, and I were coming home from school and work, my Dad looked unusually melancholy. He broke the news soon after.
At first, I didn’t really believe it. Coconut had always been there, wandering around somewhere in my backyard.
When I saw her, I was very sad. My tortoise, the pet that I had bragged about to all my friends since I was little was gone.
She was truly a wonderful pet.
I’ll miss you, Coconut. 🐢
Thank you for reading this very depressing post. (I promise the next one will be more upbeat). Do you have any pets you loved die? Have you ever owned a desert tortoise? Let me know down in the comments.
Keep On Tortoise-ing,
